In early December, we received an email from Mr. Prasoon Rajagopalan, representing an Indian chemical trading company with over 23 years of experience in diverse sectors, including cosmetics, food, feed, and fertilizers. The company expressed interest in purchasing high-purity alumina (Al2O3) with a minimum purity of 99.7% and requested a technical data sheet (TDS) and a quotation for 300 MT on both FOB and CFR Chennai Port terms.
Understanding Customer Requirements
Our Sales Manager, Kevin Pang, promptly responded to Mr. Prasoon’s email, seeking further clarification on the required grit size, packaging, and application of the alumina powder. Following our query, the customer clarified that the product would be used in manufacturing aluminum ingots, and the initial trial batch quantity was adjusted to 3,000 MT in bulk. Additionally, the customer provided detailed specifications, including:
- Grit size: d50 requirement.
- Specific surface area.
- Density.
- Crystal structure (alpha or gamma).
- Application: aluminum ingot production.
Kevin reviewed the attached specification and confirmed that our product could meet their requirements, albeit with a slightly lower purity of 98.5% (compared to the requested 99.7%). This was communicated to the customer, who subsequently confirmed that 98.5% purity was acceptable for their application.
Negotiating Terms
Following further discussions, the customer disclosed an updated order size of 30,000 MT. Kevin provided a detailed quotation based on the current market conditions:
- FOB Xingang: US$xxx/MT
Kevin explained that the alumina powder price had recently increased significantly, making it difficult to predict future trends. Transparency in pricing helped build trust with the customer.
Finalizing the Deal
After reviewing our offer, the customer decided to place a trial order for one container (approximately 25 MT) of alumina powder. This decision marked the beginning of a promising partnership between Henan Superior Abrasives (HSA) and the Indian chemical trading company.
